NewsFriends, Romans and Countymen

10 December 2008

In an extraordinary climax to last year’s local football season, the Sussex Sunday Junior Division 4 league was won by The Romans of Southwick. The local pub team, sponsored in the main by office refurbishment specialists Woodman, claimed the honours on goal difference, after they and nearest rivals BN3 United both finished level on 36 points.
The championship was, therefore, decided by the smallest of margins; The Romans finished the campaign with a goal difference of +42, compared with United’s +41 – just 1 goal separating the teams after a 16 game season.

Only a narrow 1-0 defeat in the Vic Bettney Trophy cup final prevented The Romans from completing a memorable club double. But Gordon Reed of Woodman says it didn’t stop the league-winning celebrations.

“Being successful is a bonus for this team, which is fundamentally a group of good friends playing for pride in a local county league. There is a wonderful community spirit within the players enhanced by the team’s success last year.”.
